It’s Spring…Go fly a kite

Looking for something fun and entertaining this week? Be sure to check out the Spring Kite Festival put together by Kitty Hawk Kites. There will be a number of professional kiters there showing off some of the top trick and stunt kites. Also, there will be a number of kid-related activities at Jockeys Ridge State Park. Have fun!

A windy….70 degree day at the beach

Today was overcast….really windy but temperature peaked near seventy. For March, no one here is complaining.

Off-season vacations

Been thinking about taking an off-season beach vacation? For those in on the secret, they know just how cost-effective vacationing off-season in the Outer Banks can be. Just last night, I came across a great column by Deborah Dowd, who writes a nationally recognized food blog: play-with-food.blogspot.com. Her article, which can be found in the Daily Press, shows just how much fun a short trip to the beach can be. Also, she provides a great recipe for bison stew. It is definitely an article you don’t want to miss. There are only a couple of prime weeks left in this off-season. Don’t delay…it’s time to plan those quick vacation getaways now.

Where Lou and I have been

Well all it is Lou and I. If you are wondering why we have not been blogging in awhile, it is because our Dad is non-technical savvy and broke the blog. Not only did he break our blog, he broke the whole thing. He wonders why Lou and I have taken a little interest in the trashcan lately.  What are two dogs supposed to do when everyone is at work? Usually, Lou and I spend the days typing up our blog entries. (In our opinion, someone needs to make a more paw friendly keyboard.)  Since we have not been able to blog, we need to entertain ourselves other ways. We found something that is much better than blogging but does get us in trouble. The trash buffet, for those unschooled in the finer things in life, it does not get better than a nice full trash can.  All those yummy flavors run together and create the tastiest smorgasboard. Sorry sometimes I get carried away talking about food. It’s just all those wonderful flavors of the world to be tried and such little time. We are really looking forward to some nicer weather. Though we love the winter, we are ready to go swimming. We hate having to go to the beach and just look at the ocean. Fetch is fun but nothing beats a quick dunk in the warm salty ocean. Enough of our dreaming right now, the weather is cold and we are stuck inside on this Monday morning while our parents work.

So keep your ears tuned and noses to the ground.

Getting ready for the Summer

Do you have a case of the Winter Blues? Do you need to think about a dose of summer to keep your sanity?  Well, there are some great events coming up on the Outer Banks to get you geared up for another great summer.  For all of us music lovers, two great music festivals are planned, The Outer Banks Beach Music Festival and the Beach ‘n Blues festival.  Both events show great promise. If you would like to see a little preview of the bands for the Beach Music Festival, we found some videos. Both events are not to be missed. For those that are really brave, be sure not to miss the Polar Plunge.

A great steak in the Outer Banks

There is one treat I find particularly enjoyable and that is a good steak. The most important part of being served a good steak is the quality of product that the restaurant starts with.  There is one particular location that I find puts forth a great steak, and that is JKs Restaurant.  Without having ever seen the initial product, from the results I can only gather they start with some quality beef.  The steak is served to the ordered temperature and comes out with the vegetable and starch of the day.  The steaks are served beautifully grilled and with a slight hint of pepper.  Paired with a choice glass of wine, some would call it culinary paradise.  Everything in JKs is classic steakhouse.  They even have a classic wedge salad to accompany your meal.  If you truly enjoy a quality meal in a great steakhouse, make a stop at JKs.  I promise that you won’t be disappointed.

My favorite 11 things to do in the Outer Banks

Here are my favorite things to do here:

1. Spending a beautiful day on the fine sandy beaches of the Outer Banks.

2. A long day on the water.  Whether it be kayaking, surfing, fishing, bodyboarding, doesn’t matter as long as there is water.

3. Dining at one of the fine restaurants from Corolla to Ocracoke.

4. A nice night in front of a fire on the beach.

5. Climbing up and admiring the Wright Memorial and the brothers contribution to the world.

6. Taking the ferry to Ocracoke.  It is definitely worth the ride.

7. A day BBQ’ing with a cooler full of beverages.

8. A seafood feast; Locally caught of course.

9. A lazy afternoon reading a book.

10. Running on the beach with a couple dogs.

11. Staring out to sea from the comfort of my deck.

A fine day at the beach

Our dad was off today and the temperature was in the 50’s so we walked down to the beach for a game of ball. What beats throwing a tennis ball on a beach in February? In my opinion, nothing. Well, Lou and I are off to take a nap now…

So keep your ears tuned and noses to the ground.

A day of relief on the Outer Banks

A nice wave of warm weather hit the island today and temperatures reached 50.  It was a fine day to be alive!

A slice of NYC in the Outer Banks

Many New Yorkers will tell you that you can only get good pizza from New York. According to Andy from Brooklyn, It’s all in the water. Our friend Andy thinks he knows his pizza. I have to tell you there is a great slice of New York City pizza made right here on the Outer Banks. If you want to try this best slice you have to stop at Cosmo’s in Southern Shores. For anyone who has enjoyed a slice of pizza in New York City, you know the noise adds its own flavor to the delectable blend of cheese, crust and sauce. Cosmo’s in Southern Shores is usually so busy that you will feel right at home if you are from NY. If you’re not, don’t worry…the service is so friendly that you’ll realize you never left the Outer Banks. Make it a point of your trip to try a wonderful slice of pizza heaven while you’re here.
