This is a great look at what is happening on the National Seashore. This is just the intro to the post, definitely read the whole thing. He makes some great points. Follow OBRevealed on Twitter or visit his website.
I first heard whispers of trouble at the Cape Hatteras National Seashore a few years back. This was further brought to my attention when a Hatteras resident put this story on Outer Banks Revealed. I didn’t know much about it, except for what I read, and I found it very confounding. Not having seen the exact impact of Judge Terrence W. Boyle’s decree, I imagined it was little more then an extension of what I had seen in the past. You see, the development where our house in Salvo is located abuts the Cape Hatteras National Seashore for the 15 miles it runs from Salvo to Avon. In the past, I had seen areas fenced off to protect nesting birds and turtles that had come ashore to lay their eggs. I imagined the latest “settlement” to be little more than an extension of this. I have struggled mightily about whether or not to write anything, as I have tried to keep Outer Banks Revealed apolitical and more family oriented, but the details of this case have haunted me since our most recent trip to the Outer Banks. If you stay in the northern part of the Outer Banks, you are probably totally unaware of the issue. If, however, you stay in Hatteras or Ocracoke, you’ve been affected.

If you are looking to experience true oceanfront dining in the Outer Banks, be sure to check out The Pearl in Kill Devil Hills. The Pearl is the oceanfront restaurant located in the bottom of the Sea Ranch Hotel. The cuisine at The Pearl ranges from a casual lunch menu to fine dining at dinner.
The Pearl offers both indoor and deck seating. If you are looking to truly experience oceanfront dining, enjoy dinner or lunch on the deck. It is especially impressive when it is lit at night.
The menu changes with daily specials but is traditional French. You will find French mainstays like foie gras but the menu is definitely highlighted by the fresh locally caught fish. The Pearl also offers an extensive wine list and excellent desserts. You can experience lunch or dinner everyday and brunch on Sunday.
To experience a memorable dining experience in the Outer Banks be sure to check out The Pearl.

One of the best places to eat in the Outer Banks is also one of the most unnoticed, the Kill Devil Grill located in Kill Devil Hills, is that place. When driving down the beach road is is quite easy to drive right past the Kill Devil Grill without even noticing it. That would be a big mistake. The front of the restaurant is an old dining car. The restaurant is noticeably larger once you are inside, you are left wondering where all the room came from. The food is delicious. Many of the locals favorites include cheesesteak eggrolls, fried chicken salad, and anything else on the menu. Often one trip to the Kill Devil Grill is all it takes to become a regular.

Often when visiting somewhere, we tend to miss some of the smaller, less assuming establishments. Many could be thrown off by the diner like look of the Kill Devil Grill. Though it may look like a diner, none of the negative stereotypes associated with diners would even be close.
Kill Devil Grill
The Kill Devil Grill located in Kill Devil Hills is quite unassuming when viewed from the Beach Road. It may be the unassuming nature of the Kill Devil Grill that causes many people to pass it by. Once you have visited the KDG, you will definitely make it a stop on every trip to the Outer Banks.
The historic dining car, gives you the feeling of stepping into the past. The food is equally matched to the historic dining car. The restaurant combines classic diner favorites with the freshness of contemporary cuisine. You can start your meal with their famous Cheese Steak Eggrolls. This take on the cheese steak is outstanding. For your main course, you can choose between one of their daily specials or one of the items right off the menu, either way you can’t be wrong. If you still have room, their desserts match the rest of the menu. Fresh and top of the line. On a hot summer day, what ends a great meal better than some strawberry shortcake. If you are more inclined toward chocolate, they also have a delicious chocolate cake.
No matter what you choose, making a stop at the Kill Devil Grill is something for everyone’s vacation.

Well the time has finally come. America will have its first wind powered brew pub. As part of a growing group of earth conscious business owners, the Outer Banks Brewing Station worked hard to reach April 22nd. On April 22nd, the Outer Banks Brewing Station will turn on its 10KW wind turbine. As a lover of the Brewing Station’s beer, I hope the famed Outer Banks wind doesn’t decide to slow. The same force that made the Wright’s famous will now work to power enviromentally-friendly beer.
To celebrate the launch of the wind turbine, the OBBS will host a party on April 22nd for Earth Day 2008. The party is to celebrate their launch as the first wind powered brew pub. What can be better than fossil fuel free beer. There will be live music from noon to six. $1 OBBS Beers and Southern Pig Pickin. The event is free and is being held rain or shine. For all lovers of everything green and beer, this is not to be missed. For more information, visit their website

Been thinking about taking an off-season beach vacation? For those in on the secret, they know just how cost-effective vacationing off-season in the Outer Banks can be. Just last night, I came across a great column by Deborah Dowd, who writes a nationally recognized food blog: play-with-food.blogspot.com. Her article, which can be found in the Daily Press, shows just how much fun a short trip to the beach can be. Also, she provides a great recipe for bison stew. It is definitely an article you don’t want to miss. There are only a couple of prime weeks left in this off-season. Don’t delay…it’s time to plan those quick vacation getaways now.

There is one treat I find particularly enjoyable and that is a good steak. The most important part of being served a good steak is the quality of product that the restaurant starts with. There is one particular location that I find puts forth a great steak, and that is JKs Restaurant. Without having ever seen the initial product, from the results I can only gather they start with some quality beef. The steak is served to the ordered temperature and comes out with the vegetable and starch of the day. The steaks are served beautifully grilled and with a slight hint of pepper. Paired with a choice glass of wine, some would call it culinary paradise. Everything in JKs is classic steakhouse. They even have a classic wedge salad to accompany your meal. If you truly enjoy a quality meal in a great steakhouse, make a stop at JKs. I promise that you won’t be disappointed.
