Outer Banks Beach Driving
Tips to enjoy driving on the OBX beaches:
-
The number 1 tip is only drive in 4wd vehicles. You can try it with something that is AWD but the chances you are going to get stuck are definitely greater.
-
Tire Pressure is King. The easiest way to keep yourself from getting stuck or getting yourself out of being stuck is lowering your tire pressure. The recommended PSI starts at 20. The lower the better with PSI.
-
Avoid driving through the surf or pools of water. Besides the salt water being bad for your vehicle you never know how soft the sand underneath is.
-
DRIVE SLOW! You have people doing all kinds of activities on the beach. Be careful of the people and their dogs. You're on the beach so enjoy the salt air. DRIVE SLOW!
-
Emergency items to keep in your vehicle: tire pressure gauge, jack, flashlight, tow rope, first aid kit, couple pieces of wood.
-
Bring your trash home with you. Respect the beaches and the wildlife that inhabits the beach.
-
Depending on what town you are in, be sure to obey any local ordinances on beach driving.
