     Pea Island is one the the areas that make up the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.  The refuge was first established on May 17, 1937.  Pea Island is comprised of 5,834 acres.  Pea Island is located on Hatteras Island near the Bonner Bridge.  Pea Island is about 13 miles long and ranges from 1/4 to 1 mile wide. 

     Pea Island is mainly comprised of ocean beaches, dunes, upland, fresh water ponds, salt flats, salt marshes, and brackish ponds.  Over 365 species of wildlife make up the refuge.  The breakdown of species is 25 mammals, 24 reptilian species, and 5 species of amphibians.  Many migratory birds make stops along the refuge. 

     A great spot on any tour of Pea Island is the visitors center.  The visitors center is open from 9-5 every day in the summer and 9-4 every day in the off-season.  There is no admission cost.  You can find information on wildlife located in Pea Island, schedule a canoe tour, or get a list of local birds to view.  

     Pea Island offers two amazing wilderness trails.  Need a Pea Island trail map?  The two trails are the North Pond Wildlife Trail and Sand Flats Wildlife Trail.  Both offers tremendous opportunity to view some native wildlife.
