An Overview for the WeekFollowing the awful weather of last weekend, with freezing rain, sleet and snow, the ocean calmed down and a few anglers were able to get on the water. Not many people were fishing this week, but there was some action reported. Before I get into this week’s report, I’d like to mention a couple items I have for sale that might be of interest to surf fishermen. One is an aluminum front mounted rod and cooler rack. It has six vertical rod holders, the basket size 17 inches x 31 inches, and it will hold up to a 72-quart Igloo cooler. It also has a knife holder and removable cutting board. The rack does not include the receiver bracket for a vehicle, but that can be easily fabricated by anyone who is handy with a welder. It is in excellent condition and I’ll sell it for $145.00. The other is an aluminum rod rack that can be mounted on most SUV license plate brackets. It has four vertical rod holders and is like new. The price of that one is $75.00. Shoot an e-mail to joemalat@earthlink.net and I’ll send you a photo if you are interested, or call me at 252-202-4189.

![]() | The few anglers on the water reported some speckled trout up to 4 pounds from Nags Head to Kitty Hawk, and a few puppy drum. A handful of stripers to 15 pounds were caught on bait near Corolla. The stripers are beginning to trickle down the beach and they could appear anywhere as the water temps continue to fall. Speckled trout and puppy drum were reported near the jetties at Buxton. Some stripers, black drum and puppy drum were beach near Cape Point. Hatteras Inlet reported bluefish, black drum, puppy drum and a good number of speckled trout. Ocracoke beaches reported a few stripers, black drum, puppy drum, and a few speckled trout.

| Windy conditions presented a few challenges for boaters this week, but the big news is the arrival of ocean stripers. Oregon Inlet boats that were chasing stripers had their limits of stripers on Tuesday, with most weighing between 30 and 40 pounds. Hopefully, this is the start of what will be a productive season for the big stripers.
